She is best known for acting in artistic, low-budget films which went on to blockbuster hits. She has won the National Film Award for Best Actress twice.
She held the record of winning Filmfare's Critics Award for Best Female Performer. She has appeared in some successful films like Border, Saajan Chale Sasural, Biwi No.1 and Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United. She is best notified with films like Maachis, Virasat, Hu Tu Tu, Astitva, Chandni Bar, Maqbool and Cheeni Kum. She played as protogonist in an American film The Namesake. She also co-starred in the super hit film Life of Pi, which was widely praised. She was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 2011.
Biography
Tabassum Hashmi popularly known as Tabu was born on 4th of November, 1971 in the city of Hyderbad. She had studied in St. Anns high school in Hyderabad. She relocated to Mumbai in 1983 and studied at St. Xavier's College for two years. She has a cheerful and vibrant persona that differs from those of typical Bollywood heroines. With loads of talent over the years, Tabu for sure, has made a slot for herself as an actress. She began her remarkable career by making a small appearance in the 1980 film, "Bazaar". At the age of 14, she played a small role in the 1985 film titled "Hum Naujawan". Her very first film as a lead actress was "Coolie No. 1", the Telegu film. She will be seen in Salman Khan's upcoming film Jai Ho.

Tabassum Hashmi "Tabu" was born to Jamal Hashmi and Rizwana, who got divorced soon after. Her mother was a school teacher and her maternal grandparents were retired professors who ran a school. Her grandfather, Mohammed Ahsan, was a professor of Mathematics and her grandmother was a professor of English Literature. Baba Azmi, who is an Indian film cinematographer is her uncle. Indian film and television actress Shabana Azmi is her aunt. She is the sister of 1980's Bollywood actress Farah Naaz.
Boyfriend/Marriage
The great film actress Tabu is not yet interested in marriage. Previously, there were gossips that she was dating her co-actor Nagarjuna from the telugu film "Ninne Pelladatha". She stated that, "Boyfriends come and go, but Nagarjuna remains". Currently, Tabu is single and not dating anyone.

Tabu has started her acting career with the bollywood film "Bazaar" and "Hum Naujawan", as a child artist. After her lead debut in telugu film Coolie No.1, she went on to star in several films. She has also featured in Boney Kapoor's longest making film Prem. Her first release in Hindi as a leading lady was "Pehla Pehla Pyar", but she came into notice with the film "Vijaypath". In 2001, she starred in film "Chandni Bar" as a bar dancer, which earned her second National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance.
She made her Hollywood debut with 2007 film "The Namesake". She also starred in Cheeni Kum in which she played a 34 year old woman who falls in love with a 64 year old played by Amitabh Bachchan. In 2012, she featured in her second Hollywood film, Life of Pi. She is a life member of International Club of Asian Academy of Film and Television, Noida.
Career: Tabu began her film career as a lead actress in the Telugu movie ‘Coolie No. 1’. The movie was released on 1987 and opposite Star Venkatesh. Tabu first debut Hindi movie ‘Pehla Pehla Pyar’ released In 1994. But the movie was not success at the box office.
His next chance to given director Farooq Siddique Hindi movie ‘Vijaypath’ released in 1994. The movie features: Ajay Devgan, Tabu, Danny Denzongpa, Gulshan Grover and Reema Lagoo. In the movie, plays the female lead role Divya Bharti, but was replaced by Tabu after Divya Bharti Death. The movie was also not success at the box office.
In 1996, her movie ‘Saajan Chale Sasural’ directed by David Dhawan. The movie star-cast Govinda, Karishma Kapoor, Tabu and Satish Kaushik. The movie music composed by Nadeem-Shravan. The movie released was 12 April 1996, after released the movie, the movie was hit at the box office.
Then, her next movie ‘Jeet’ released on 23 August 1996. The movie directed by Raj Kanwar and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. The movie fetures: Sunny Deol, Salman Khan, Karishma Kapoor and Tabu. In the movie, Tabu plays the role of Tulsibai. The movie was super-hit at the box office.
After success, Tabu next super-hit movie ’Maachis’ directed by Gulzar and movie features: Tabu, Om Puri, Chandrachur Singh, and Jimmy Shergill. The movie music composed by Vishal Bhardwaj. After released the movie was super-hit at the box-office. In the movie Tabu, plays the role of Veeran. For the movie, Tabu won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her best performance.
